SOPREMA Takes the « Lead » for Sustainable Material Transparency

October 23, 2017

Montréal, October 23, 2017

On Thursday, October 19th, SOPREMA issued the transparent declarations of 141 of its products to meet the new requirements of certification programs such as LEED v4. LEED certified professionals and stakeholders involved in sustainable development issues were at the Centre Phi in Montréal to discuss the importance of manufacturers of building products designing those products to make buildings more sustainable.

As part of their transparent approach, SOPREMA published four environmental product declarations (EPD) covering more than a hundred roofing membrane products. The company also published five eco-declarations validated by the independent third party Vertima, which will soon be followed by three others currently being validated. Ten Health Product Declarations (HPD) have also been published. Among these, the HPD for SOPRA-ISO was selected as part of a third-party validation pilot project with the Health Product Declaration Collaborative, which is a first among Canadian manufacturers for this certification.

To date, 288 LEED® certified projects in Canada have been carried out with SOPREMA materials.

“By making these transparent declarations, we disclose the environmental and health impacts of many of our products at all stages of their life cycle. In doing so, we need to share our revenue figures as well as our weaknesses. Despite the risks these releases represent, disclosing this information strengthens our commitments. We know that our ecodesign efforts are helping to produce more sustainable materials. In addition to reducing the environmental impact of our products, we are striving to make them more efficient, which ultimately reduces the overall impact of the building.”

Jean-François CôtéDirector of Standardization and Scientific Affairs at SOPREMA Canada

“Obviously, we want to continue to be a first-class partner in achieving LEED® certification projects. These projects have been motivating for me and for our employees. We are proud to contribute to the completion of globalization and structuring projects in terms of sustainable construction.”
