WHITE PAPER ON PERMEABLE AIR BARRIERS
Wall Expertise That Stands Alone
DOWNLOAD. READ. LEARN.
Vapour-permeable air barriers appeared quite recently in the North American market. Today, there are dozens of products to choose from, featuring an extensive range of vapour permeance. Selecting the appropriate combination of materials is crucial to avoiding moisture-related problems in wall assemblies. This is especially true in certain circumstances where highly permeable air barriers can increase the risk of moisture build-up in walls.

USING AN AIR BARRIER TO AVOID THESE PROBLEMS
The use of an air barrier becomes necessary to control air leaks. Air barriers are generally divided into two categories: permeable and non-permeable.
Non-permeable air barriers
- Resistant to :
- air leaks
- water infiltration
- diffusion of water vapour
- Must always be set on the warm side of the insulation
- Are considered air/vapour barriers
Permeable air barriers
- Are good protection against air leaks and water infiltration in the building envelope
- Allow the diffusion of water vapour
- Are not considered vapour barriers
