Case Study on a LEED v4-Certified Plant in Ontario

In May 2020, SOPREMA completed the construction of its brand-new waterproofing product manufacturing plant in Woodstock, Ontario. With an area of 10,015 m², the building was designed to meet the requirements of LEED v4 certification. It is actually one of the few industrial buildings to have obtained this certification in Canada.

From the start, the members of the work team—made up of SOPREMA, Lemay, and Pomerleau—had to join forces and align their visions so as to achieve the requirements of LEED v4 certification, the most recent version at the time. In the form of a case study on the Woodstock Plant, this virtual talk between the various project stakeholders will allow you to demystify the LEED standard, more particularly for a building in an industrial context. Solutions and specific examples to reduce the environmental impact of the building and increase the comfort of the occupants will also be presented.

Loïc Angot, MBA, PA LEED, ENV SP

With more than a decade of sustainable building and planning design experience, a Master’s Degree in Engineering and an MBA, Loïc Angot is currently leading Lemay’s Sustainability Practice, and is a key driver of its Net Positive^TM approach. Loïc has worked on numerous high-profile commercial, institutional and residential projects as an expert in sustainable design in France and Canada.

He is a graduate of the Institut national des sciences appliquées de Rouen, France, and HEC Montréal. His exceptional analytical skills and collaborative approach are informed by insight and expertise. In 2020, he won Construction Canada’s Emerging Leader Award in the “Industry Contribution” category.

Alexandre Bernard has been a valuable member of the Pomerleau team for over 13 years. He served as Project Director on the SOPREMA Woodstock facility. His experience spans several industrial, institutional and commercial projects.

He is knowledgeable in the use of BIM software and lean construction methods, has been recognized for his sustainability diligence, and was involved in one of the first LEED® Platinum certified projects in Canada.

Alexandre received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (co-op) from the University of Ottawa in 2009. He is a member of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) since 2012, and the Québec Order of Engineers (OIQ) since 2009.

Florent Bellini

Plant Manager – Woodstock

After being hired by SOPREMA in May 2014 as the Sorgues Plant Manager in France, Florent had the opportunity to come to Canada in 2018 to supervise the construction of the company’s brand-new waterproofing product manufacturing plant in Woodstock, Ontario. He has held the role of Plant Manager there since the end of the construction in 2020. Before joining the SOPREMA Group, he was a Process Engineer, Production Manager, then Plant Manager for a leading Austrian group in the market of terracotta products for construction. Thanks to his engineering training, he is able to adapt quickly to the issues related to the building materials industry, but what gives him the most satisfaction in his daily work is self-sufficiency, a taste for challenges, and teamwork.

Jean-François Côté holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from the Université de Sherbrooke and a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) obtained in 1998.

He joined SOPREMA in 1999 as a Chemist, where he worked on the development of adhesives and sealants used in construction and civil engineering. From 2009 to 2015, as Director of Strategic Development at SOPREMA, he coordinated the activities of the R&D, Technical and Marketing Departments of the company. In his current role, he represents SOPREMA on technical committees of industry associations (ARMA, PIMA, and CIMAC) and is actively engaged in various North American standards development organizations (CSA, ASTM, and ULC).

He is a registered Chemist in the province of Québec with the OCQ, is Vice-Chair of the ASTM D08 Committee on Roofing and Waterproofing, and Chair of the CSA A123 Technical Committee on Roofing Materials.
