Building With the Future in Mind

As a manufacturer of building products, it is essential for SOPREMA to act by promoting sustainable development and to contribute to the future of the current and successive generations.

With that in mind, we have developed our first Canadian guide to sustainable solutions. This tool gathers together all our products and systems that can help promote eco-friendly construction.

This guide is intended for construction professionals concerned with improving the way of designing, constructing, transforming, and renovating buildings and infrastructure.

WHAT IS A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION?

Sustainable solutions are initiatives based on the will to resolve several environmental, social, and economic challenges in a durable and systematic manner. As part of the use or operation of a building, sustainable solutions must contribute to the following:

Extending the building’s useful life

Improving the building’s overall performance

Increasing the building’s resilience

Ensuring the health and comfort of the occupants

DECLARATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS: TRANSPARENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY

To facilitate the adoption of a global approach in the selection of materials, new documents are becoming available to help professionals consider the impacts of our products on the environment and health, among other factors.

Transparent Declarations

Being the first manufacturer in its sector to take the transparency shift in October 2017, SOPREMA has disclosed the following transparent declarations: Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Health Product Declarations (HDPs).

ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION (EPD)

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) provides information regarding the impact a product may have on various environmental factors. It usually summarizes the metrics resulting from a lifecycle analysis (LCA) in accordance with the requirements of Standard ISO 14040.

SOPREMA has disclosed 11 EPDs which synthesize the results of a lifecycle analysis. These documents are very useful for obtaining points for certain credits of LEED v4 and v4.1 certifications.

HEALTH PRODUCT DECLARATION (HPD)

A Health Product Declaration (HPD) aims to communicate information about the effects that a product may have on the health of individuals. It requires disclosing all of the ingredients of a product and includes health risk assessment based on public databases.

SOPREMA has disclosed 34 HPDs that synthesize information relating to the effects that a product may have on human health. These documents are very useful for meeting certain criteria for LEED v4 and v.4.1 and WELL certifications.

Green Building Certifications

There are several certifications that promote building sustainability in Canada, such as LEED® and WELL® to name a few. In general, these certifications help to ensure the sustainability of a building in relation to the issues they address.

Depending on the number of credits obtained, the designation ‟Certified”, ‟Silver”, ‟Gold” or ‟Platinum” will be assigned. The higher the level, the greater the sustainability of the project.

LEED V4 CERTIFICATION

More than 117 SOPREMA products can contribute to obtaining points or credits for LEED v4 and v4.1 certifications.

WELL V2 CERTIFICATION

More than 104 SOPREMA products can contribute to obtaining points or credits for WELL v2 certification.
