The new formula of the SOPRA-XPS product line mainly replaces the use of HFC-134a and CO2 with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1,300 with a formula made of HFO and CO2 with a GWP of 1. This represents a reduction of the GWP of the products of at least 99.92% compared to the previous formula.
For SOPREMA Canada, October 2020 marked the culmination of major changes to its SOPRA-XPS insulation product line. These changes have made it possible to considerably reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the manufacturing process (Scope 1) and the product (Scope 3).
Overall, for SOPREMA, the reduction in GWP makes it possible to decrease total GHG emissions by 98.71%, which represents more than 110,340 Mt CO2 eq. avoided.

The evolution of the SOPRA-XPS line opens the way to a whole new generation of eco-friendlier products, both in terms of supply and the end of their useful life. While keeping the same properties regarding the performance of the products, these major changes in the formula specifically relate to the carbon footprint and recycled content of the line.
SOPREMA has chosen Honeywell’s low Global Warming Potential Solstice® Gas Blowing Agent (GBA) for production of the SOPRA-XPS product line. SOPREMA replaced HFC-134a with Solstice GBA in its entire SOPRA-XPS panel production at its manufacturing site in Sherbrooke, Québec.
By replacing hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blowing agents with low-GWP solutions, SOPREMA meets changing environmental regulations calling for a global phase down of HFCs. Solstice GBA provides energy efficiency performance similar to that of HFC-134a, and superior to that of carbon dioxide. Based on hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) technology, Solstice GBA has a GWP of less than 1 (more than 99.9% lower than HFCs and lower than carbon dioxide).
